Manchester Unspun

Andy Spinoza arrived in Manchester in 1979 as a student and never went back to London. He founded City Life magazine in 1983 and reported on the Madchester music scene for NME, The Face and the Manchester Evening News, where he was the Diary Editor for ten years. He then enjoyed a 25-year career in PR promoting the city’s regeneration and its culture and hospitality scenes.

Manchester Unspun

Spinoza’s 2023 book Manchester Unspun is an account of the city’s extraordinary recent transformation, packed with stories of the author’s experiences with everyone from Tony Wilson and Andy Burnham, to Gary Neville and Caroline Aherne.

“Coolly analytical, exceptionally well-informed and hugely entertaining.” The Guardian

“The best book I’ve ever read about the city and the people behind it.” Sacha Lord

“A fabulous, compelling book full of larger-than-life characters.” Michael Crick.

“Every city needs its great chroniclers. We are lucky to have Andy.” Lemn Sissay.
